Are you or a loved one considering dentures? Whether it’s to restore your smile or improve your quality of life, dentures are an excellent solution for those with missing teeth. But have you ever wondered how these miraculous dental prosthetics come to life? Look no further! In this blog post, we’ll take you on a journey through the world of denture making. From the dedicated professionals who craft them to the steps involved in their creation, we’ve got you covered.

Who Makes Dentures?
The art of crafting dentures involves a dedicated team of dental professionals, including:
- Dentists,
- Clinical Dental Technicians and
- Dental Technicians.
Dentists and Clinical Dental Technicians are specially trained to work with patients directly. They assess your mouth to advise on the best denture options, and take the impressions and measurements required to make the denture. They work closely with the Denture technicians who are highly trained artisans with a deep understanding of dental anatomy and aesthetics who create the actual dentures. These oral healthcare workers ensure your dentures not only fit comfortably but also look natural, helping you regain your confidence and enjoy life to the fullest.
Together, they work seamlessly to provide you with a personalised solution for your unique needs.
Coming to see our Clinical Dental Technicians can also make your denture process faster. If you need to have full dentures, you don’t always need to see a dentist first. You can come straight over to us. No back and forth from the dentist. Isn’t that great?
The Conventional Denture-Making Journey
Creating dentures is a collaborative process involving both the clinician and the patient. Here are the essential steps to expect when embarking on your denture-making journey:
1. Consultation:
It all begins with a consultation with a Dentist and/or your Clinical Dental Technician. They will assess your oral health, discuss your needs and expectations, and determine if dentures are the right solution for you. High-quality materials are then chosen , such as acrylic or chrome-cobalt, to create the base structures of your dentures. We value your input and strive to create dentures that align with what’s best for you
2. Selection of Materials:
Denture technicians use high-quality materials to craft your dentures. This includes acrylic resin, which mimics the look and feel of natural gums, and durable acrylic teeth that resemble real teeth.
3. Impressions:
Accurate impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth are taken. These impressions serve as the foundation for your custom dentures. Often two impression visits are needed to make the denture as accurate as possible.
4. Bite Registration:
Your bite relationship is recorded to ensure proper alignment and function of your dentures.
5. Wax Try-In:
Before the final denture is made, you’ll have a chance to try a wax model. This allows you to get a feel for what your dentures would feel like when completed. It’s also the best time to make adjustments for fit and aesthetics.
6. Finalisation:
Once the wax model is perfected, the final denture is fabricated and polished to a beautiful shine.
7. Fitting:
The moment of truth! Your new dentures are carefully fitted to ensure they sit comfortably in your mouth and function properly. You may also need adjustments after this stage. This is normal as we work with you to make the fit just right.
The Time It Takes
The time it takes to make dentures can vary depending on your specific needs and any required adjustments. The entire denture-making process typically takes a few weeks, allowing for precise craftsmanship and necessary adjustments. Patience is key, but the result is well worth the wait – a radiant smile you’ll be proud to show off.
What we do now! Digital all the way!
At Wellington dentures we try to keep moving forward with new innovation and technology. That’s why we are now able to make dentures, Digitally.
The process of designing a denture digitally offers many advantages such as:
Faster turnaround time: This process can cut out or combine the above mentioned steps so that we can get you the denture faster.
Ivotion technology: The dentures are milled from one continuous disc. The disc is made of high quality PMMA material. This means it is structurally strong and longer lasting.
Accuracy: The designing and planning are done with precision and allows for a consistent and predictable outcome with little room for error.
Digital denture record: Your denture will be kept on file. So in the event you lose the denture or it is damaged beyond repair, we can make a new one exactly as the original. No mess no fuss!
What to Expect After Your Denture is Made
Congratulations, you’re now the proud owner of a beautiful, custom-crafted smile! Here’s what you can expect:
Adaptation Period:
It’s normal to experience an adaptation period as you get used to wearing dentures. Speech and eating may feel different at first, but with practice, you’ll become more comfortable.
Regular Check-Ups:
We recommend regular check-ups to ensure your dentures continue to fit well and remain in excellent condition. Adjustments may be needed as your mouth changes over time.
Maintenance:
Proper denture care is essential for their longevity. Cleaning and storing your dentures as instructed by our team will help keep them in pristine condition.
Enhanced Confidence:
With your new dentures, you can smile, speak, and eat with confidence. You’ll no longer have to worry about gaps in your smile or discomfort caused by missing teeth.
Life with Dentures
After your dentures are made, it’s important to remember that an adjustment period is normal. You may need some time to get used to speaking and eating with them. Don’t worry; your clinician and denture technician are there to support you throughout this transition.
Maintaining your dentures is relatively straightforward. Regular cleaning and check-ups will help ensure their longevity. With proper care, your dentures can last many years, helping you enjoy life with confidence and comfort.
